Fire Hero Learning Network Adds New Features for Instructors and Group Training Delivery

In response to popular demand, the Fire Hero Learning Network has added a new online program type: Flex Programs. Flex Programs have features that help instructors use the program with their classes or officers use it with their crews. The first two Flex Programs are available now:

Learners can experience Flex Programs in three ways.

Self-Paced Program. Individual Fire Hero Learning Network registered users can take Flex Programs just like any other module (Self-Paced Program).

But Flex Programs also have special features for instructors/officers and group use.

Instructor Mode. In group contexts, an instructor or officer can use the Flex Program’s video lessons and written resources in a class or training session, then authorize the members of their group to take the Skills Challenge test for that Flex Program to earn their Certificate of Completion without watching all the videos again independently. To use Instructor Mode, the instructor/officer must:

  1. Self-designate as a fire service instructor on their User Profile.

  2. Take the Flex Program as an individual and pass the Skills Challenge test to earn their Certificate of Completion.

  3. Activate Instructor Mode for that Flex Program. This enables the instructor/officer to show the lesson videos in any order and removes the requirement to take Knowledge Checks before advancing in the module.

  4. Show the lesson videos to the class or group and discuss.

  5. Use the Instructor Features button on the module’s interface to authorize class/group members to skip directly to the Skills Challenge for that Flex Program so they can test to earn their Certificate of Completion. Enter class/group member emails and the Fire Hero Learning Network system will email them with information on how to take the Skills Challenge test to earn their Certificate of Completion. They must have a Fire Hero Learning Network account.

  6. Check the Instructor Features page to see how your class/group members are doing in testing for their Certificate of Completion.

For ideas on how instructors/officers can use Instructor Mode for the Leading in Times of Challenge Flex Programs, download the Instructor Guide.

Instructor Mode may also be available for Self-Paced Programs that are not Flex Programs.

NFFF In-Person Class. The NFFF will offer some Flex Programs as in-person classes with an expanded format and additional components for group learning delivery. For information on this program or on becoming an NFFF instructor, please file a support ticket.

Choose the Flex Program method that works for your goals and implementation context. Use the support ticketing system to ask questions or send comments about Flex Programs.
